A group of Knox students has been awarded ‘Rescue of the Year’ by Northern Beaches Surf Lifesaving for their rescue of three swimmers at Whale Beach in November last year.
Knox Grammar School
While patrolling the beach on Saturday 26 November, Knox students Angus Kellaway (Year 9) and Jack Bregenhoj (Year 10), who were patrolling the water’s edge, noticed three swimmers who were struggling after being swept into a rip.
The boys quickly jumped into action, alerting their Patrol Captain, before Richard Leonard (Year 11) and Luke Parks (Year 10) grabbed a rescue tube and fins and a rescue board to reach the swimmers.
The other Knox students helped launch the inflatable rescue boat (IRB) and then provided care to the patients when they were back on the beach. Many of the students had only qualified for their Bronze Medallion the previous week.
The students in the patrol group, Oscar Press, James Pegg, Angus Kellaway, Harrison Muller, Richard Leonard, Dylan Gay, Luke Parks, Jack Bregenhoj, Sydney Robertson and Nicholas Dijohn, were acknowledged for their efforts in June at the Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Awards of Excellence.
Knox students patrol at Whale Beach each Saturday throughout the summer sports season, with the relationship between the Whale Beach SLSC and Knox dating back to 1999.
